Magellan
The Magellan® Autologous Platelet Separator System is a point-of-care processing system designed to prepare platelet rich plasma (PRP) and platelet poor plasma (PPP) from a small mixture of blood and anticoagulant. It is built as an automated platform that separates PRP from anticoagulated blood and dispenses it into a separate sterile syringe.
Medtronic has historically referenced market interest in the Magellan™ Autologous Platelet Separator in its communications.
What the Magellan machine is (system components)
According to the operator manual, the Magellan system consists of:
- A microprocessor-controlled centrifuge
- Syringe pumps
- The necessary single-use processing components (disposables kit)
The system is supplied as:
- The Platelet Separator Instrument, and
- The Platelet Separator Disposables Kit, which is required for each procedure.
What the Magellan system is designed to do
The system is designed to be used in a clinical laboratory or intraoperatively at point of care for the safe and rapid preparation of:
- Platelet poor plasma (PPP)
- Platelet concentrate (platelet rich plasma / PRP)
The principle of operation is centrifugation-based separation of anticoagulated whole blood into components by density.
Safety and contraindications (device-level)
The operator manual states the system is contraindicated for a hemodynamically unstable or hypercoagulable patient, and notes that medications affecting coagulation may inhibit use.
How Mayam Aesthetics would position this machine
At Mayam Aesthetics, Magellan is positioned under PRP / PRF as the dedicated processing platform for preparing PRP and PPP at the point of care, using an automated system that combines centrifugation and syringe pump technology with sterile, single-patient disposables.
